Women and Fashion Design Go Together

Versace. Armani. Karan. Just a few one-name wonders in the world of fashion design but ones that have created a multitude of fashion trends that are so iconic there is no one in the world who doesn’t recognize their work, even those who claim to not be even remotely interested in fashion.

Fashion is one of the biggest industries in the world today, not just because people need to be able to dress themselves in appropriate outfits but also because it is considered one of the backbones of our existence. Without fashion, we would have no outlet for our individuality, no way to express to the world who we are and what we are inside and out.

While both men and women benefit a lot from fashion, there is no denying that it is the female race that benefits more. If you’ve ever been to any Fashion Week or avidly follow all the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, you’ll know why. Women just have a natural inclination towards anything fancy, frilly and pretty which is no wonder they are the best inspiration for fashion designers.

And yet, despite the fact that women wear fashion designs beautifully, their presence in the world of fashion is still distinctly lacking, particularly in the realm of fashion design which up to the present is being dominated mostly by the males. When a woman says she is working as a fashion designer, people remark that it makes sense because she loves shoes but when it’s a guy who says he’s a fashion designer, they look at him in awe and suddenly, fashion is no longer frivolous and shallow but essential and necessary. Go figure.

Well, actually don’t. The fact is, when women work in an industry that is mostly associated with them, people automatically assume you’re there for the perks and frivolities but you don’t have what it takes to understand what makes it tick with society, that women plus fashion somehow substantially lessens the brain cells. Thank God for powerful women CEOs who have proven that wielding power while clad in the latest and most fashionable power suits doesn’t mean you don’t have brains.

It is also perhaps due to the fact that men in fashion are a novelty. There was a time when men in fashion were thought of to be gay or very confident of themselves and their abilities to forego more significant job opportunities in the normal world. But if you really think about it, wasn’t it true that there was only one fashion designer who was included in Time 100: The Most Important People in the Century and that it was a female? So really, the truth is female fashion designers are the novelty and not the men.

As far as glamorizing the world of fashion goes, it was also a woman who started the concept of runway shows. Jeanne Paquin, considered one of the world’s first female couturiers, would often organize fashion parades and send outfitted models to society events like operas and races. She was also renowned for her eighteenth-century inspired pastel evening dresses which was totally unheard of at that time since evening gowns were always in dark colors to emphasize formality.

While a male’s perspective is always welcome and refreshing in fashion, nobody really knows the human body, particularly a woman’s body better than a woman. They also know what other women want and therefore, would know what would sell and what wouldn’t. Lastly, who else buys more clothes anyway?

Choosing a Fashion Design School

A recall of a fashion design school brings back some good memories to me because, in every organization, the people you work with, share impressions and knowledge with, and built relationships with will vary but all with the shared passion for fashion…

When we are in the sense of considering what are the basic factors that tends to unite generations, and differentiate them from all others, it will always be an overriding sense of design and fashion which are in vogue at the time. In order for each and every generation to have a distinctive fashion style and to overcome every possibility, then we have to have fashion designers who are there taking the lead in shaping and building the fashion of today. Interestingly, if you are one of those who have a strong interest in the world of fashion, then going to school that meets your passion is a fantastic way of taking a step on the journey to turning your interest into a career.

These aspects will set the foundation and criteria you need to start your career in the fashion world in meeting key people such as business partners, employees or employers, begins with the relationships you form in fashion design school. There are quite a number of fashion design schools around the world. One of those is located in London- the central Saint Martins College of Art and Design is one of the most famous schools. Other famous schools in London are The Royal College of Arts and the London College of Fashion. In other locations are such famous schools as the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Parsons the New School for Design in New York City and AIU in Los Angeles.

You see, there are countless design schools you can enroll yourself in. Here are some tips on how to choose your fashion design school.

First is to list the things you will need to look into, such as tuition, programs offered-make sure that your field of fashion is offered, degree levels offered, tuition, placement record and many more that you might think of. Use this list in your search to find the right school.

Second, list the schools you are interested with and visit those. If a personal visit isn’t possible, a video or virtual tour online may suffice.

Now here’s a good part, if you feel like wanting for a scholarship then you can visit the Internet and apply for grants and scholarships you may be eligible for while you wait to hear from the schools applied to. Remember, patience is a virtue.

With all the information from these three options you will consider, if you make sure that you do your research both online and with your local education board, they can give you and provide overview of what other schools can offer, but once you have this information speak to the colleges themselves, and they can give you much more detail on the courses. As what I have said earlier-patience is a virtue. Just a simple note to remember, dreams can only be untrue the moment you stop believing in it-go and seek for it.

Getting Started in Fashion Design

The runway, cameras, models and lights are enough to intoxicate anyone. But, fashion is about more than being part of the latest trendy fashion show. It’s about putting great ideas on people. The fashion industry has many jobs and many levels. For example, there’s the latest hot Italian designer and there the designer who sells out by moving clothes to the local budget-friendly department store.

Getting your foot in the fashion door can be a challenging task, especially if your goal is to be a fashion designer. You can help your cause greatly by creating designs to show off. This applies even if you’re looking to get into a design school. While you can go the traditional paper and pencil route, there’s a plethora of software out there that can make the job easier and help you improve your designs.

You want your portfolio to look like you, not a cheap copy of whatever is hot at the time. It should show that you have the ability to understand colors, know how to solve fashion problems and display your textile knowledge.

Here’s a great fashion business tip. When you’re just starting out, focus on one thing and knock it out of the park. I think what trips up many would-be designers is they try to create entire clothing lines from the start. Do you know who Ralph Lauren is (I hope so)? Guess what. Mr. Lauren got his start by doing just ties, that’s it. So yes, you can start very small and become an icon who’s designs are seen around the world.

In case you’re looking to go the fashion school route, be patient. Remember, in this industry, you’ll have to pay your dues to move up. If a really solid internship opens up, grab it. Yes, it’s not going to pay anything, but the experience you’ll get and the connections you could make might be priceless.

And if you’re not going to school or have been to school already, look to purchase some good supplies, such as design software and get to creating. You’ll need to be good at marketing yourself to move forward.

Lastly, let me leave you with some ideas to get started. One way to improve your chances of success in any industry is to specialize in something. Fashion is no different (again, think of Ralph Lauren). Here are some ideas for specialization: children’s clothing, costume design, footwear, lingerie, sportswear, men’s items (ties, suits, polos, etc), swimwear, uniforms, women’s wear (dresses, suits, etc).

Necklaces and Earrings
Clunky still rules. But now chunky beads are being challenged by pieces with several layers of metal worked into one necklace. You have an option of going for pieces that have intricate bangles dangling chandelier style,or chains of teardrop sections..

As for earrings, you have the chance to mix old favorites with some new favorites This year bold is beautiful in latest fashion accessories.

What can we say: boots, boots, boots! Knee high boots are hottest now with the stiletto heel. But there is also the flat soled ankle boot that is a perennial challenger. The leather types may be either sleek and shiny or more suede and earthy.

Takes To Be A Fashion Designer

Let’s get one thing straight – to be a fashion designer you’ll need to possess a formidable range of skills and personal qualities. Be honest with yourself, evaluate the extent to which you possess these skills and qualities otherwise you’ll eventually run into obstacles in your attempts to be a fashion designer.

First and foremost you need talent. This encompasses a wide range of skills including drawing, sewing, research, vision and creativity. Without a high level of natural talent you can never be a fashion designer.

The fashion industry is tough and competitive – you need to be prepared to use your abilities to give yourself an edge over your rivals. This only comes through having the confidence to truly believe in what you’re doing and the assertiveness to deliver.

Without a high level of ambition and the necessary commitment to achieve that ambition you may struggle. You have to be prepared to work hard yet remain open to learning. Displaying high levels of flexibility and using criticism from others in a positive way will allow you to adapt in what is an ever-changing environment.

Effective communication skills are a must. If you can’t explain, listen, negotiate or delegate you’ll struggle. Likewise organisational skills – if you can’t plan and co-ordinate you simply won’t finish jobs on time. Part of this comes from being able to make quick decisions and accepting responsibility for those decisions.

If you want to be a fashion designer then you need to accept the fact that you’ll also be running a business. That means being able to spot opportunities as well as carrying out the more mundane tasks that are part and parcel of running a business. You’ll need to be able to show leadership and be prepared to take a few risks if you want to achieve real success.

On a more artistic level you’ll need to be imaginative and creative to generate new ideas. Without a genuine ability to visualize, draw and paint in two dimensions you won’t be able to deliver innovation which is the energizing force of fashion design. The same can be said for color sense and the many practical skills that go into making a fashion designer.

To be a fashion designer means being prepared to work as part of a team. You’ll need to enjoy group activities and recognize you’re only part of a bigger picture that draws from the input of many players. This calls for a friendly, calm temperament, patience, humour and at times a little bit of humility.

The one personal quality that pulls all of this together is having a real passion for fashion – without this the other skills and personal qualities become undermined and you’ll find it difficult to be a fashion designer.

If you feel you possess these qualities then don’t give up until you cover all the steps you need to take to become a fashion designer.
